Healthy fats found in nuts support cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of heart disease. They can lower LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) and increase good cholesterol levels. 

Nuts are also a good source of fiber, which supports healthy blood sugar levels and can be part of a low-carb diet. 

Consuming moderate amounts of nuts can also support a healthy body weight and may be eaten as part of a weight loss diet (1). 

What are Brazil Nuts?

Brazil nuts are large, crescent-shaped nuts with a rich, creamy taste. They have a distinct nutty flavor with hints of earthiness and a slightly bitter bite. Some people also notice a subtle coconut-like undertone in the flavor of Brazil nuts.

The texture of Brazil nuts is typically firm and dense. They have a smooth surface and a slightly crunchy bite. 

When you chomp into a Brazil nut, you’ll notice that it’s not as buttery as some other nuts, but still offers a satisfying crunch. The texture can vary a bit, but overall, Brazil nuts tend to be hearty and substantial.

Brazil nuts are native to the Amazon rainforest in South America, where they grow on tall, wild trees that can reach up to 160 feet in height. 

Unlike other nuts, Brazil nuts are not mass-produced. They are hand-picked by local harvesters from the Brazil nut tree, making it a sustainable industry that supports the economies of Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. 

The cultivation of Brazil nuts is not only important for local economies but also for preserving the biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest. The Brazil nut tree is a keystone species, meaning it is essential for the diversity and health of the entire rainforest.

What are Macadamia Nuts?

Macadamia nuts have a slightly sweet, nutty flavor. Their creamy and smooth taste is similar to a combination of butter and coconut.

Macadamia nuts have a buttery smooth and slightly chewy texture. They are one of the creamiest nuts available. When you bite into a macadamia nut, it’s soft and almost melts in your mouth. The texture is less crunchy compared to many other nuts.

Macadamia nuts, originally from the eastern coast of Australia, have become popular around the world. They can now be found in regions like Hawaii and South Africa. The evergreen macadamia tree can grow as tall as 40 feet.  

The processing of macadamia nuts involves cracking the hard shell to extract the edible kernel. While processing methods can vary, sustainable practices are essential to minimize environmental impacts, including waste generation and energy consumption.

Due to their increasing popularity, macadamia nut cultivation has expanded significantly, further challenging the environmental impact.

Pro-tip: Just two Brazil nuts a day assures you reach the RDA for selenium.  But don’t overdo it! Too much selenium can be harmful and cause unpleasant and even dangerous side effects, including nausea, vomiting, and fatigue (2). 

The copper in Brazil nuts aids in the production of collagen (hello beautiful skin, hair, and nails!) and enhances iron absorption.

A great source of magnesium, Brazil nuts also support bone health, muscle and nerve function, energy production, and blood sugar regulation.
